Indonesia Integrates AI into $15 Billion Free Meal Program Amid Governance Challenges
Indonesia is set to embed artificial intelligence across key government initiatives, including a $15 billion free meal program targeting child malnutrition. The pending regulation, awaiting President Prabowo Subianto's approval, outlines a 2026-2029 adoption roadmap for ministries and regional governments. Officials estimate AI implementation could boost Indonesia's GDP by 12% ($366 billion) by 2030.
The free meal initiative (MBG) currently serves tens of millions of children daily, addressing stunting affecting 20% of Indonesian youth. AI will optimize menu design for regional nutritional needs, monitor kitchen hygiene, predict food demand, and detect financial irregularities. The system will also integrate health data for emergency early-warning systems.
Governance failures have plagued MBG since launch, including recent leadership arrests and mass food poisoning incidents. Budget constraints compound operational challenges as Indonesia balances ambitious social programs with fiscal limitations. Tech giants including Meta, IBM and Microsoft contributed to drafting the AI framework.
